In June 2018, the Polish train manufacturer NEWAG concluded a framework agreement with Siemens Mobility for the equipment of a total of 100 locomotives and multiple units with the latest European Train Control Standard (ETCS). The contract was extended by a further 100 vehicles the following year, so that Siemens Mobility can equip up to 200 vehicles with ETCS on-board units for NEWAG. As of today, 121 vehicles have already been ordered and three vehicle registrations have been obtained for commercial operation in Poland.
Both the Dragon and Griffin locomotives and the Impuls II multiple units will be equipped with ETCS Level 2 by Siemens Mobility. The proven Siemens ETCS Level 2 solution Trainguard 200 OBU with Baseline 3 Maintenance Release 1 will be used here. In December 2020, this solution had already been installed and approved for 51 locomotives and 8 multiple units.
For the safe display, Siemens Mobility uses the redundant MFTRS1080kwa driver's cab terminal with patented IconTrust® and SelectTrust® technology and DEUTA software application, assessed to SIL2, compatible with Baseline 3.4.0.
While the two locomotives Dragon and Griffin have the same basic requirement with an identical IconTrust® certificate, the Impuls II multiple units were equipped with an additional IconTrust® certificate due to the slightly modified requirements.
Numerous ETCS projects have enabled Siemens Mobility and DEUTA to work well together. As a result, the three vehicle approvals for the Dragon and Griffin locomotives and the Impuls II multiple unit 3-part were obtained in record time. We are particularly pleased about the praise from Siemens project manager Solveig Lüderitz" The cooperation among all participants was based on open communication and mutual trust. The commitment from everyone was evident and was the only way we could massively shorten the project completion time".
